Plastic Surgery Differs From Cosmetic

Plastic and cosmetic surgeries are both considered the same thing. Both are terms used to describe a procedure in which a plastic surgeon uses surgical techniques to manipulate selected parts of the body. However, the two terms differ when it comes to the specific reason that a patient seeks a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgery is intended to restore form or function to those selected body parts. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery is intended to restore form. Most patients will seek this form of surgery strictly for aesthetic reasons.

Cosmetic surgery is always elective; most patients of cosmetic surgery are simply looking to make general improvements to their body, including the face, stomach, or thighs. However, patients of a plastic surgery are not always seeking an elective surgery. Many times, these patients may have experienced some sort of trauma or injury that has reduced the function of certain body parts; these body parts will most often include the nose, breasts, or limbs. In fact, the first recorded plastic surgery was a skin graft, which was performed on a severely injured soldier who had experienced an extremely disfigured face as the result of participating in combat. While these patients do not always need plastic surgery to restore function to these body parts, a this type of surgery can vastly improve both the function and overall form of the selected body part.

Rhinoplasties and breast enhancements are two examples of plastic surgeries that can also be elective, cosmetic surgeries. For instance, many patients will seek a rhinoplasty to restore form to a blocked nasal cavity. Women who have experienced a masectomy, will seek a breast enhancement to restore form to their breast, which have been removed due to the masectomy. However, some patients will seek a rhinoplasty if they do not like the size or shape of their normally functioning nose.

Likewise, younger women will have a breast enhancement to increase the overall size of their breasts. A breast reduction is also more of a plastic surgery. This may be necessary for patients with breasts that are too large, which can cause severe back pain and impede the patient's normal activities.
