What Happens During a Face Lift Procedure?

A face lift procedure is a relatively simple, straight-forward surgery, the goal of which is to tightent the skin and muscles, and remove excess fat and tissue. This results in fresher, younger-looking skin. The first step in the process is anesthesia, followed by the incision, surgical work and then a period of recovery for the patient. Here's a look at what actually happens during a cosmetic surgery face lift.

Face Lift Procedure: Anesthesia

Either local or general anesthesia are used prior to a face lift procedure. Local anesthesia is typically only used for less intensive surgeries, while general anesthesia is required for most procedures. The surgeon will administer anesthesia prior to operating, rendering the patient completely unconscious or in mild cases, unable to feel pain. It's best to speak to your plastic surgeon before the surgery to understand the type of anesthesia you'll receive. Most people don't want to remain awake during surgery, which is the case if only local anesthesia is used.

Face Lift Procedure: The Incision

After anesthesia is administered, the plastic surgeon will then make the necessary incisions to perform the face lift procedure. During hte surgery, the skin is lifted from the tissue underneath. The incision is usually made just above the hairline so scarring is minimal after healing. During the typical face lift surgery, the surgeon begins the incision above the temple on the side of the face, and then continues to the lower scalp.

Face Lift Procedure: Surgery

After the initial incision, when the skin is separated from the tissue, the surgeon perform several different actions, depending on the desires and necessity of the patient. In most typical cases, the muscles are tightened, and any excess fat or tissue are removed. This improves the appearance of the skin and the contour of the face. After the necessary surgery is performed, the physician will position the skin back into place with stitches or staples, and then wrap the affected area in bandages.

Face Lift Procedure: Recovery

Recovery from a face lift usually takes three to four weeks, depending on what type of work was done. However, it's recommended that individuals considering a face lift procedure make sure they have plenty of time to heal with no external obligations. In fact, it may be difficult to leave the bed in the beginning. It can take up to a month to heal completely, and in rare cases, even longer. There will be very little visible scarring once the patient has healed, since the incisions are made above the hair line. Healing can be a painful experience, but pain medicine is typically prescribed.
